A word from Jerry:
I’ve been in the service business since I started repairing televisions and radios when I was in junior high school. It was in 7th grade when I was given a television by my great uncle Tony and it didn’t work. I got it home and was able to repair it and that is where it all started. I have a degree in Electronic Engineering, and have worked on Computer Numerical Controls, DC Motor Drives, biom1edical electronic equipment, computers, and two-way radio communications, to name a few.
Due to the drastic change in the economy a few years ago, it resulted in the loss of my job of over 24 years at a large company. Being too young to retire, I wanted to do something I enjoyed. I found my first Maytag Neptune washer, repaired it, and the rest is history.
Next, I was called to look at a dryer that wasn’t heating. When I opened it, I was surprised to see the entire vent and the air passages in the dryer to be completely full of dryer lint and foreign objects. I started cleaning the dryer and found over $25 in change and paper money, pens, and a fork. The lint filter had been left out of it for some time and the client had no idea that it was important.
Another time I had a lady that had a dryer she had just connected in her new house. She called to say that it wasn’t heating properly. I had her check a couple of things and finally asked her to go outside with the dryer running and check to see if the air was coming out the vent. When she went outside to check, she immediately said that the dryer vent was taped shut. This is a serious fire hazard.
A lady in Port Huron had a Maytag Neptune washer that stopped spinning. Upon looking at the machine I found that the motor control board was defective. I replaced the board and the machine operated fine afterwards. The client told me that her house was haunted and that electrical and electronic devices stop working all the time in her home. I wanted to be sure I didn’t have a call back on this, so I looked around the room and said, “If anyone is listening, please protect the Maytag Neptune Washer and Dryer here. The lady that lives here now needs these machines and please help them to continue running.” The lady has had no further problems with the Maytag washer and dryer since.
On mentoring, I have had many people ask for my assistance or that I have told them ways to repair or maintain their machines so that they don’t require service. My wife and two of my daughters are now trained so they too can diagnose some problems with various machines. I have talked with people over the phone as far away as California, Florida, Virginia, Montana, Iowa, Kansas, and a few other places and helped them repair their machines.
